We would like to take this opportunity to welcome Computer Power User Magazine to our list of confirmed sponsors. CPU Magazine will be giving all attendees a free copy of CPU along with discount subscription coupons, and they are also providing some swag for our random prize draws. Please be sure to visit the magazine’s site and show them some appreciation.

Computer Power User is a monthly print publication aimed at people who know that technology rocks. The kind of person who gets his kicks upgrading graphics cards and smashing benchmarks. The type of person who reinstalls Windows at 2 a.m. on a Saturday because his system keeps crashing while he’s ripping MP3s. Or the person who repartitions his drive to create a dual-boot system and install Linux so he can learn more about how the OS works.

It’s for people who enjoy wireless gadgets, fast Internet connections, and Quake III. People who like honest reviews, useful tips, and refreshing commentary from world-class computing experts. People who would rather check out the next exhibit at E3 in person than rely on the latest drivel from some PR flack.

Also, Dustin is hosting a Counter Strike 1.6 tournament on April 12 & 13th with some pretty nifty prizes. He’s got some other tournaments coming up too, check them out and support one of the few gaming centres who actually get involved in the local LAN scene.

Here is the official list for the World Cyber Games 2008 tournament season. It is important to note that WCG Canada may not offer all games at the National Level, so we will only be offering WCG regional qualifiers for the games which will be chosen for the WCG Canada Nationals. It is also important to note that while we will be holding tournaments for WCG qualifying, Digital Storm will be offering a wide variety of games and tournaments which are not WCG Qualifiers.

Alrighty - without further ado, here is the WCG 2008 list broken down by platform:

For PC: 2008PC
For Xbox: 2008Xbox
Mobile: 2008mobile

We will post the rules for each WCG tournament on the Digital Storm forum as soon as we get them from the powers that be at World Cyber Games.

Digital Storm is now on MySpace. You can check us out and join our Friends list - Blade Radio is there too. Now you have one more place you can check for updates while you’re surfing - but all new announcements will always be made here on our official site first.

In other news, World Cyber Games is looking at the problem of the Duck Jump/Silent Running exploits that caused so much controversy at last year’s Grand Finals. WCG Grand Final Chief Referee for CS 1.6, Thierry “Tee” St-Jacques-Gagnon has released a discussion article on the World Cyber Games official site. He has offered three possible solutions to the problem:

1- Old rule remains : dispute format gets changed, asking the teams to specify what round they think they could have been confused or disadvantaged by an opponent using this method;

2- Get rid of the rule, thereby allowing the move and play even though it can mess up the hitboxes.
3- (In Thierry’s opinion the fairest of all 3) Get rid of the rules. Create a WCG Mod for the competition where the third duck-duck combo would have a jump penalty, therefore disallowing a player to move fast AND silent at the same time for a long period of time. At the same time, the players who are used to doing this will still be able to do it, but won’t get the hidden advantage of it. This could also allow the WCG committee to fix the silent plant bug and other bug, facilitating the referees’ job and allow them to focus on things like ghosting and dead-speeches.

Players are welcome to submit their thoughts on this matter by sending them to Thierry’s email: thierry [at] worldcybergames [dot] ca. We’ve also opened up a discussion topic on our forum to get your opinions on this important issue.

Here is Digital Storm’s Preliminary List of Games - we will add to this list as we get closer to the LAN date and possibly if we get enough requests for certain games - and we are open for suggestions.

Please note, this is NOT the official WCG 2008 list. We will make an official announcement as to which games and tournaments will be WCG qualifiers once the WCG organizers make their list public.

In other news…

The World Cyber Games organization should be announcing their 2008 Games List within the next week. I’ve seen a preliminary list, and it looks…interesting? The projected date for the WCG Canada Nationals is August 23 & 24, but that may be subject to change.

Just a reminder that we will be at the Croatian Cultural Centre from 1pm until 4pm on Saturday, March 22 so that you can buy DSL tickets in person. There will be further sales dates and locations announced shortly.

Our first “in person” sale date will be March 22 from 1 - 4pm at the Croatian Cultural Centre, located at 3250 Commercial Drive in Vancouver. We will be offering further dates and locations for “in-person” ticket purchases and will post the dates as we confirm them. Remember, all seats are reserved so teams and groups will need to purchase their tickets in blocks at the same time. We’re looking forward to a great event, and we hope to see you there.

In other news, we are just awaiting confirmation on some very cool tournaments and sponsorships, so watch for those announcements to come soon.

It’s official - Digital Storm LAN 2008 has a date and a home. The tournament, which is a KillaNet Technology Ltd. production, will be held August 1, 2 and 3rd 2008 at the Croatian Cultural Centre, located at 3250 Commercial Drive in Vancouver, BC.There will be space for 350 gamers, and the event will once again be a regional qualifying location for the World Cyber Games. Tickets go on sale March 10th at a cost of $45.00 each for the weekend. This event is reserved seating, so any teams or gamers who wish to sit together, must buy their tickets in blocks. We will be announcing more about ticket sales as we get closer to the On Sale date. We are still working on some areas of the website, but it will be 100% live very soon.

Game events will begin on the Friday night and run right through to the final events on Sunday afternoon. We are working on some special tournaments, but the WCG tournaments will be dependent on the Games List chosen by the World Cyber Games producers. There will be some casual play time available during the weekend, and all players qualify to win some very cool swag. We will also be offering event shirts for sale at a very reasonable price, we will announce when they become available for order.

We are currently working to finalize sponsorship deals, and will post them as they are confirmed. You can hear news and broadcasts about Digital Storm on Blade Radio, the official internet radio broadcaster for Digital Storm. There is also a rumour floating around that two Vancouver studios will be going head to head in a Team Fortress 2 match, but this challenge has yet to be confirmed.

We still have room for a few more good volunteers and referees (and sponsors), please see our Event Opportunities page for more information. Digital Storm’s community forum is also open for business - there you can talk with staff and other attendees, ask questions, issue challenges and more. We also have a chat channel on KillaNet’s IRC server - you can simply click the Chat link at the top of this page or if you are a mIRC user, it’s irc.killanet.net 6667 #digitalstorm.
